Opening a World of Opportunities: Beau Blackwood's Story
Beau Blackwood is a young BridgingApps client with IDD (intellectual/developmental disability) and limited verbal skills. He received his high school diploma from Fort Bend ISD in spring 2025, and is currently enrolled in Houston City College’s VAST Academy for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. His mother, Laura, is a registered nurse who works at UT Austin.
As part of a BridgingApps program, Beau recently received a laptop to use in his studies. The following information comes directly from Beau and Laura.
A World of Technology Uses
Beau uses his laptop daily at VAST Academy. It’s great for:
· Email and other digital communications.
· Canvas, the Instructure app for managing academic assignments, which he’s learned to handle really well.
· Online courses (Laura uses a screen extender to help monitor his learning).
· Connecting with Texas Workforce for job training.
· Learning PowerPoint. (“We’d been trying to get him a class on that skill since his first year of high school,” says Laura.)
· Using AI to generate images, such as self-portraits. (“He loves the image technology because it lets him show himself as he sees himself, as the person he can be.”)

The laptop package has allowed him to bypass “piecemeal” learning for a smooth and easy transition into the digital world.
The Client Journey
The family first heard about BridgingApps’ digital-skills training in 2025, while Beau was in high school. Laura stumbled across a Facebook post and sent a message to BridgingApps, which was “fantastic with answering very quickly. Since then, we’ve received quite a bit of digital-literacy support and technology assistance, which has helped Beau thrive.
"We appreciate BridgingApps for understanding that parents also need training, that they have to learn how these things work in order to help their children. We’re hoping for continued, practical guidance that will help us get even more out of the laptop and other equipment.”
Beau loves having his own learning device. To him, it's a dedicated tool, a part of his identity, a Holy Grail. In the future, it will be his main method for communicating with employers.
The Great Game Changer
The laptop has changed Beau's everyday life by opening up learning and work opportunities that wouldn't otherwise exist. New digital skills are improving his employability and providing assistive technology for his limited verbal abilities. without the technology, he felt completely disabled. Now, he's much more enabled, using AI-based tech to share ideas and knowledge that were previously "locked inside" his head.
The family wants everyone to understand that technology isn't just helpful: for people with disabilities like Beau, it's essential. Before the technology, his limitations were all that were visible, and a few saw the intelligence beneath the surface. Now, the laptop and software have helped him demonstrate that there's way more going on in his head than anyone gave him credit for.
