From Navigation Program to Networking
Andrea has been a part of our Navigation Program for the past two years thanks to our partnership with @UnitedWayHouston.
Navigators are coaches and personal guides who will work one-on-one with individuals and families, helping them create their own personalized journey to financial stability and access services along the way; They are trained on core coaching skills, implicit bias, motivational interviewing, cultural humility, trauma informed care, various navigation tools, data tracking and assessments, how to make referrals, and other key tools.
As a single mother working full-time as a massage therapist, she has remained deeply committed to building a better future for herself and her family while steadily working toward a new career in Information Technology!
Currently finishing her degree, Andrea is pursuing her goal of becoming a Quality Assurance Engineer which reflects her deep passion for the IT Industry and her vision for long-term stability.
With support from the Navigation Program, Andrea was able to attend the AfroTech Conference here in Houston, TX—one of the nation’s largest conferences focused on empowering Black professionals in technology by connecting attendees with employers, industry leaders and career opportunities within the tech industry. An experience Andrea described as both “inspiring and empowering.”
Through the conference, she engaged with recruiters, engineers, and industry professionals, gaining valuable insight into what companies are looking for and how to continue positioning herself for success. These connections not only strengthened her confidence but also reinforced her commitment to developing her skills and pursuing opportunities in the tech industry.
Andrea’s experience highlights the impact of the Navigation Program in supporting clients as they pursue meaningful career transitions providing not only Financial Coaching and Financial Assistance but also access to opportunities that expand networks, build confidence and open doors to long-term economic mobility.

From Andrea:
I truly enjoyed attending the AfroTech Conference. One of the biggest highlights for me was the opportunity to connect with professionals across the tech industry and gain insight into current trends, emerging technologies and career pathways.
The workshops and panels were especially valuable as they provided practical knowledge, real-world experiences and motivation from leaders who have successfully navigated the field.
I also found the networking opportunities extremely beneficial. Being able to engage with recruiters, engineers and other professionals helped me better understand what companies are looking for and how I can continue to grow and position myself within the tech industry.
Overall, the conference was both inspiring and empowering, and it reinforced my interest in continuing to develop my skills and pursue opportunities in technology.
Thank you again for making it possible for me to attend.
